Landforms and People

We are learning about landforms in science right now, i.e mountains, islands, valleys, etc. After reading an article about oil being drilled in the Antarctic, our class had a discussion about whether it is okay to drill for oil. It was a very interesting discussion and some believe that it is harmful to landforms (such as glaciers) and other students believe it is important because it is a necessary resource.
Furthermore, some students agree that it is okay to own land with these resources and others disagreed.
What are your thoughts? I welcome any 3rd grader or adult to comment on the changes that people make to the land...
